Medicare Supplement Plan N like Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan M is also a new addition as of June 1, 2010. This would be another option to attempt to lower out-of-pocket costs for consumers and to provide them with additional benefits not found in their current plans.

Medicare Supplement Plan N includes basic benefits which include:

  • Hospitalization: Medicare Part A coinsurance plus coverage for 365 additional days after Medicare benefits end.
  • Medical Expenses: Medicare Part B coinsurance (generally 20% of Medicare-approved expenses) or copayments for hospital outpatient services. Plans K, L, and N require insured to pay a portion of Medicare Part B coinsurance or co-payments.
  • Blood: First 3 pints of blood each year. Hospice: Medicare Part A coinsurance.

Hospice Care will be included in all Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans as of June 2010.

Medicare Supplement Plan N is also similar to other Medicare Supplement Insurance plans such as Medicare Supplement Plans D and F. While Medicare Supplement Plans F and D cover all or part of the Medicare Part A (Hospital) and Medicare Part B (Medical) deductibles the Medicare Supplement Plan N will cover the Medicare Part A (Hospital) deductible in full, a co-pay structure was created for the Medicare Part B (Medical) coinsurance. Rather than pay the traditional coinsurance you will have co-payments for doctor appointments. Your office visits will be $20 and co-payment for emergency room trips will be $50. If you are then admitted to the hospital, this emergency room co-pay is waived.

While the Medicare Supplement Plan N has 100 percent coverage for the Medicare Part A (Hospital) deductible you will have no coverage for the Medicare Part B (Medical) deducible.

In many states Plan N will have no Medical Underwriting. You will not have to answer any of the medical questions or fill out pharmaceutical information to apply. In a few states there will be limited underwriting for this plan. Our representatives can give you more information on which states will be doing so.

Overall the premium cost of these Medicare Supplement Plan N is expected to be around 70% of the cost of Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan F, or about 77% of the cost of Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan D. Medicare Supplement Plan N could be a better plan for your budget than the Medicare Part C Advantage plans. Plan N may be a good option for you because it offers very low out-of-pocket responsibilities and no network restrictions.

All plans were standardized by the federal government in 1992 for your protection. This means that you are to go by the letter I.D. of the plan to determine what benefits each plan will cover.

The only 2 things that an insurance company who offers a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan N can have any control of are:

  1. Underwriting
  2. Premium price
